The Kalkberg is a 91 m high rock in the center of Bad Segeberg, which is not made of limestone (calcium carbonate), as the name suggests, but rather of gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate) near the surface and an unweathered core of anhydrite (pure calcium sulfate).

The Siegesburg once stood up here. Of the extensive castle complex, only the lower half of the well shaft remains in the rest of the mountain range.

Today the Kalkberg, the caves beneath it and the Kleiner Segeberger See are protected as a geological unit.
