Construction of the church began in 973. In 1652 a new facade was built, probably based on the plans of the architect and master builder Baldassare Longhena. The work was carried out under the direction of Giuseppe Sardi. In 1742 the old building was demolished and rebuilt under the architect and master builder Francesco Bognolo. The new church building was built in the Baroque style.
The church of San Tomà contains, among others, works of art by the artists Antonio Zucchi (1726 - 1795), Girolamo Campagna (sculptor - * 1549 in Verona; † 1625 in Venice) and Jacopo Guaranà (1720 - 1808). The church has been closed to the public for many years.
