San Giorgio Maggiore is an island in the Venice Lagoon, facing south from the San Marco (bacino) basin. Benedictine abbey and church on the island bear the same name. The term maggiore (Italian for large) was chosen to distinguish it from the former small Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio in Alga.
