"The temple holds the oldest spring in the region, whose healing waters gained fame far beyond the borders of Thuringia." In 1590, the lord of Liebenstein Castle, Hermann von Stein, cleared the square around the spring below the castle after reports of the healing effects of the water circulating in the area. [...]

The fountain temple from 1816 contains the Casimir spring, which is one of the oldest documented healing springs. With a temperature of 15.7 degrees and a pH value of 5.7, you can tap water here that is quite salty. This is drunk in quantities of 0.2 - 0.3 l before main meals. It has a particularly positive effect on stomach and intestinal problems.
The spring was opened up by Hermann zum Stein von Liebenstein in 1607. Three years later, the then ruler, Duke Johann Casimir of Saxony-Coburg, commissioned a study that proved its healing powers. Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen finally established a real spa in 1798.

        The Healing Water Legend

"Once upon a time, a cowherd led his herd daily to pasture in the Liebenstein Basin between Burgberg and Aschenberg. There was also a water trough, fed by surface water. One of the cows, which often wandered away from the herd, had a particularly healthy, shiny coat. The shepherd observed the cow to get to the bottom of the matter. He noticed that she was drinking from water that bubbled up from the ground beneath an old willow tree. Curious, he also tasted the spring and noticed a peculiar taste. He reported this to his lord, Herrmann vom Stein zum Liebenstein..."
