A look into history: According to Bettina's research, the bridge was built in 1927 by the entrepreneur Karl Mehner over what was then the Elster flood bed. At that time, that meant: The bridge ran over generally dry terrain. Water was only channeled into the Elster flood bed during floods. This only changed when the Neue Luppe was built between 1934 and 1938, which significantly changed the water regime in the northwest floodplain. The 70-meter-wide flood channel not only served as flood protection, but was also intended to achieve exactly what is now being repaired selectively with complex projects such as “Lebendige Luppe”.
