In the middle of the large market square is the St. Peter's Fountain, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century and shows St. Peter with the key to heaven.
Originally the fountain saint looked towards the east. When the fountain had to be rebuilt in 1836, the residents on the west side demanded that St. Peter should now be turned towards them. A heated argument broke out and no amicable settlement could be reached. The Höchstadt district judge was called to mediate, and he then quickly ordered that in the future the fountain saint should not face either east or west, but rather south. Because of this dispute, St. Peter continues to look toward the south to this day.
