The "High Kemenate" in Karlstadter Hauptstraße, a stone tower built from stone, comes in the core from the founding of the city, was built around 1200. Located near the southern city gate, the building was initially the seat of a military commander, who eventually took command of a section of the city fortification. Over the centuries and into the 1970s, the house was then used by many different craftsmen, such as bakers, butchers and blacksmiths, and often rebuilt.
After the fundamental refurbishment in the 1990s, Karlstadt's oldest preserved secular building today serves as a city library.

Hiking

"High Kemenate" means "chamber with a chimney" and was originally the name for smaller, z. T. heated living quarters in the hall of a castle. Later and on larger castles, the bower was a separate residential building reserved for women.
The facade facing the main street is noteworthy, with its Renaissance painting of very high quality in its origins. Above the window are two round niches with Latin mottos: "hic habitat felicitas" and "nihil intret mali", which translates as: "Happiness lives here, may misfortune never occur."
