A work by the great Danish master builder Christian Frederik Hansen (1756-1845) shows that a stable does not have to be inferior to that of a villa in terms of architectural quality: today the classicist, thatched building on Altona's Elbchaussee is called the half-moon house because of its crescent-shaped floor plan .
It once housed English merchant John Thornton's carriage, cows, horses and gardeners. As a result of an accident, the stable, which was completed in 1796, burned down to the ground in 1820, but was rebuilt in a slightly different design by his nephew Johan Matthias Hansen - also an architect.
Unlike the Thornton country house opposite, which was replaced by a new building in 1913, the stable still stands today. It reminds those in the know of a time when the area was still dominated by agriculture and not by dense settlements and road traffic.
After years of vacancy, the HERMANN REEMTSMA STIFTUNG acquired the already gutted half-moon house and prepared it for rental. Now people are working there again, although no longer with cattle and beets.
