Komodo National Park is world-famous for the Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis. These giant lizards only exist in the island world between the larger islands of Sumbawa in the west and Flores in the east. They are also known as “Komodo Dragons” due to their appearance and aggressive behavior. The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard species, reaching an average length of 2-3 m. The species is the last representative of a relict population of large lizards that once lived in Indonesia and Australia.
Komodo dragons are at the top of the food chain and are carnivores that feed primarily on carrion. However, they often attack live prey, which they ambush and kill at high speed. The Komodo Dragon's diet consists mainly of domestic red deer (Rusa timorensis), wild boar and water buffalo.
