The Ergste Ruhr Flood Bridge, located in Schwerte-Ergste, is an important engineering structure and a historical monument. This railway bridge, which is part of the Ardeybahn, stretches for around 110 meters in the Ruhr meadows of Ergste. It serves as a so-called flood bridge or emergency flood bridge, which means that it is normally dry and is only flooded by the Ruhr during strong floods. This design shows how engineering solutions have been developed to meet the challenges of natural events. The Ergste Ruhr flood bridge, located about 400 meters west of the Wandhofen railway bridge, forms a functional unit with it. It is part of the Prussian-Hessian state railway line from Schwerte to Iserlohn, which opened in 1910, and lies on two bases made of natural stone blocks. Its design takes the pressure of the floods into account by integrating a passage in the high dam that leads to the actual Ruhr bridge.
