Sculpture of the poet Qu Yuan 屈原 (339BC ~ 278BC).
A lot of his life is actually unclear, but he is regarded the first poet whose works are associated with his name. Before this was not usually common.
Also his biography was written by a third person of that period and is likely heavily influenced by his views.
He is also considered the first to have abandoned the strict four character verse style with verses of variable length.
He died by suicide, and today’s practice of dragon boat racing and Zongzi (the triangular rice balls) can be traced back to his suicide and people’s actions and reactions at the time.
Qu Yuan was ‘discovered’ as a patriotic poet during the Second World War and became mainstream after the communist victory in 1949.
