The Marble Mountains (Vietnamese: Ngũ Hành Sơn) are a group of five marble and limestone hills south of Da Nang in central Vietnam. Considered a spiritual and geological landmark of the region, they contain a network of caves, tunnels, and Buddhist pagodas.

The Five Elements: Each of the five mountains is named after one of the five elements of East Asian philosophy: Thuy Son (water), Moc Son (wood), Hoa Son (fire), Kim Son (metal), and Tho Son (earth).

During the Vietnam War, the caves served the Viet Cong as a secret field hospital, weapons depot, and meeting place.

Numerous pagodas and shrines are located in the mountains. The Huyen Khong Cave is particularly famous for its enormous Buddha statue, which is often dramatically illuminated by natural light filtering through openings in the ceiling.

At the foot of the mountains lies the village of Non Nuoc, renowned for its stonemasonry. The quarrying of marble directly from the mountains is now prohibited to protect the monument; the artisans use imported stone instead.

The mountains are open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Entrance costs approximately 40,000 VND. The highest mountain, Thuy Son, can be reached via steep steps (approximately 250-300 steps). Alternatively, a glass elevator is available for an additional fee of 15,000 VND each way.

Allow at least two to three hours to explore the main caves and viewpoints at your leisure.

Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the marble steps can be very slippery, especially when wet.
