    Troßberg Castle

The site of the former castle is located on a corner of the Schweinberg, surrounded by the upper reaches of the Pilsach. During the High Middle Ages, Troßberg Castle was the seat of the bailiffs who ruled the Litzlohe district, which later became part of the Pfaffenhofen district. The previous bailiffs were the Counts of Kastl, followed by the noble Wolfstein family. The Litzlohe bailiwick then passed to the Dukes of Bavaria at the end of the 13th century.

In 1293, a Konrad Senfft was documented as living in the castle. Just one year later, in 1294, "Rudigerus dictus Furhenriet" was living in the castle. The last certain owner of the castle was Heinrich der Zenger in 1377; this Bavarian ducal ministerial family also lived in the Velburg and Lutzmannstein castles. Later, another bailiff may have been identified, namely in 1487 an Albrecht "Ratz von Freyenried", they were a branch of the Ratz von Eismannsberg.

The mountain spur on which the castle ruins are located falls steeply down into the valley on three sides, and on the northwest side merges into a plateau that is at the same height as the castle square. This side is secured by a mighty moat that curves slightly outwards and runs from the eastern to the southern mountain slope. An outer wall is no longer visible on the plateau. On the east side of the castle site, a step in the slope is visible, which may have served as a kennel, and may have been the entrance to the castle.

The castle square itself is located on a triangular rock plateau that has a truncated cone shape. The plateau falls almost vertically towards the moat, the remaining sides are formed by steep slopes, some of which are interspersed with rocks. The plateau is completely flat on its surface, and numerous traces of buildings can be seen in the form of small and large hollows and hills. A somewhat larger pit in the western part of the area is certainly the basement remains of a larger building, and a small, funnel-shaped depression could possibly mark the site of a cistern. Another building stood at the southern tip of the complex, where a few remains of foundation walls have been preserved, which probably belonged to a tower-shaped building. A large ashlar stone is still visible from it.

The moat can still be clearly seen, otherwise vault collapses can still be seen on the castle grounds, the castle was strategically located - view of 4 valleys.
