The Radegast spring is a source of lime tuff. The calcareous and clear waters are characterized by a high oxygen content. These areas are colonized mainly by lime-forming mosses of the association Cratoneurion commutati. Another spring creek rises on the northeastern outskirts of Wakenstädt.

The Radegast has a run length of about 34 km. The water catchment area of the Radegast covers an area of approx. 190 km². It extends in the south to the area Krembz / Groß Salitz (Nebenlauf Ellerbäk), in the east to Vietlübber See (Nebenlauf Seegraben) and in the northwest to Roduchelstorf. The largest branch is the Tiene with a sub-catchment area of approx. 40 km². Important tributaries are the stream from Wakenstädt (second source), the Ellerbäk, the Stresdorfer Bach, the Tiene, the Winkelbäk and the Cordshagener Bach. In addition to the natural tributaries, the Radegast is fed by a variety of sources in the area of the edge of the valley and by connected trenches and drainages.
