The Defterdar Mosque on Eleftherías Square, like the Loggia Mosque on Plane Tree Square, is a relic from Ottoman rule. It was built in 1725 by the Treasurer (Ottoman: defterdâr) Ibrahim Efendi and with its bright, typically oriental domed roofs it forms a stark contrast to the Italian period buildings on the square. The well-preserved two-story building is still owned by the Turkish community, but services are no longer held. Small shops and a café are housed in the rooms on the ground floor. On July 21, 2017, an earthquake caused the Defterdar Mosque's minaret to collapse and severely damaged the roof of the purification well. Plans are currently underway to rebuild the minaret to restore the silhouette familiar to many visitors to the city.

The most striking building on Freedom Square is the Defterdar Mosque, whose minaret towers high in the sky. The mosque was built in 1725 under Ottoman rule.
