The red town hall is the unmistakable center of the main market and divides the inner-city square into the upper and the lower main market, formerly known as Jacobsplatz.
The town hall was built in 1567 after the Grumbachschen Handel as a massive department store with shops on the ground floor and served as a residence for Duke Ernst the Pious during the construction of Friedenstein Palace. Today the picturesque Renaissance building is the seat of the mayor and the registry office.
