First mentioned in documents in 1229, its construction dates back to the second half of the 12th century. In its current form, it corresponds to a late Romanesque single-nave village church, about 8.25 m long and 5.15 m wide. In 1704, a trapezoidal extension of the choir was added to the west. There is a roof turret near the western gable. It carries the two oldest bells in the city from the 13th century. One bell weighs 60 kg, the other 70 kg. The bells are rarely rung. They also serve as the striking mechanism for the clock.

The pilgrimage route leads to the Romanesque St. John's Chapel. It served as a hospital church on the outskirts of the city in the Middle Ages. St. John's Chapel houses Quedlinburg's oldest bell, dating from the early 13th century. The portal features depictions of scallop shells and bread—perhaps a reference to lifelong pilgrimage or to pilgrims who were welcomed here.

The Protestant St. John's Church is a majestic and predominantly neo-Gothic church in the southeast of Quedlinburg with a widely visible tower. It was built on the outskirts of the St. Johannis Hospital Foundation to relieve the pressure on the medieval St. John's Chapel, which had grown too small due to the growing community. The dedication of the church took place in 1906. Special features of this recent Quedlinburg church building are the elaborate and precious stained glass in the church windows and the musical instrument of the Hausneindorfer organ builder Röver.
