The goose gate got its name because the geese from Altenkirchen Castle were led through this small gate to the Quengelbach to feed there. In 1662, the Count of Sayn-Wittgenstein is said to have fled through this gate after the city was captured and besieged as a result of the inheritance dispute over the division of the counties of Sayn-Altenkirchen and Sayn-Hachenburg.
