Wilhelmstraße, the pedestrian zone of the district town, was presumably named after Wilhelm I, King of Prussia.
The former Vordergasse used to have a curved layout, which was redesigned after the great town fire in 1728.
Since then, all streets and alleys in the town center have run in straight lines with the market square as the center.
As a thoroughfare for the old trade routes Cologne-Leipzig and Cologne-Frankfurt, more than 12 inns and more than 8 butcher shops were located here at times.
