Brief historical explanation:
The liberation of Merksplas - Colony 29/09/1944.
After fierce fighting with numerous casualties, CPL John Harper managed to force a breakthrough in the German lines. Thanks to his courage, the Allies managed to cross the ring moat and liberate Merksplas Colony.
John Harper himself was eventually fatally shot. After the war, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross by the British government.

John Harper is buried at the Leopoldsburg Commonwealth War Cemetery
Square: V. Row: B. Grave: 15.
