The little Swaledale village of Thwaite is nestled in a pretty valley between the sprawling Great Shunner Fell and the more modest Kisdon Hill. The village was the home of brothers Richard and Cherry Kearton, pioneering nature photographers who produced the first ever natural history book populated entirely by photos. Kearton's Country Hotel and Restaurant and the adjoining tearooms are named in their honour.

Thwaite is a beautiful, quaint, and quirky Yorkshire village nestled between Great Shunner Fell and Kisdon Hill. If you have the energy, it is quite possible to do out-and-back routes to both hills on the same day, giving you a total of around 16 kilometres of hiking. Though Thwaite is quaint, it doesn't have much by way of parking, but there is a small pull-in on the B6270, just outside the village, immediately below the junction with Cliff Gate Road.
