The church has a long and rather complicated history, its roots dating back to 1763, when it was built as a church at the monastery of St. Nicholas in Bielsko Podlaskie. In the 1870s, the parishes in Bielsko were merged, and the redundant church at the monastery was moved by the residents of Augustów to their location; it was consecrated in its current place in 1878 under the invocation of St. John Bohoslov (John the Theologian).
