The Lake Constance basin was created by the mighty Rhine glacier during the Ice Age. The ice was more than 1,000 meters thick at that time. 14,000 years ago, the water of the original Lake Constance reached up to Chur; the lake was twice the size of today. Three countries border the third largest inland lake in Central Europe: Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The small town of Bodman provided the name. The German word podmensê emerged from the Latin Lacus Bodamicus, which developed into Lake Constance.
