Austrian architect Alexander Wittek designed and built the magnificent building at the end of the 19th century, when Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of Austria-Hungary. Initially it was used as a town hall, and even today people in Bosnia call it Vijecnica - "the town hall". After the Second World War it became the National and University Library.
