This steep and strenuous slope owes its name to the fact that the Spanish builders there had some Indians roll down huge rocks that were taken from the fortress of Sacsayhuamán by order of Francisco Pizarro to be used in the construction of the Cathedral of Cuzco.

Ángel Carreño says: “The huge stones that rolled down the slope were hardly stopped by dozens of armed Indians, many of them with broken feet because the Spanish foremen made them work from morning to night with sticks and whips.”

For this reason, this slope was later called “Cuesta de la Amargura” (Hill of Bitterness).
