The tower of San Vittorio, built in 1768, played a vital defensive role, watching over the southern coast of the island of San Pietro to protect it from potential enemy invasions. Due to changed circumstances, the tower was later converted into an astronomical latitude station. This transformation occurred at the request of the International Geodetic Commission, which needed an astronomical station located on the geographical parallel 39° 08' latitude in Carloforte for educational-scientific purposes.
