The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn is a retreat for a number of animal species that otherwise only occur sporadically or not at all in North Rhine-Westphalia. Honey buzzard, black woodpecker, wood sandpiper are species of particular interest under the Birds Directive. Redstart, green woodpecker, water rail, pygmy diver and goat milker are residents of the area, who are also on the red list. Little woodpecker, golden oriole and teal are also native to the area. Among the many dragonflies, the Great Moosjungfer, which is endangered in its population, is one of its last occurrences in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
