Beautiful or not beautiful? The seemingly monolithic and very striking “Kursaal” building complex is a congress and cultural center with several large halls and other event rooms. It was designed and built by Rafael Moneo. Opened in 1999, it is now also home to the San Sebastian Film Festival. The largest hall has a capacity of over 1,800 seats.

The Kursaal Conference Center and Auditorium was inaugurated in 1999, and since then it has been the main venue of the San Sebastián Film Festival. It is an architectural complex made up of a large auditorium, a large chamber room, multipurpose rooms and exhibition halls designed by Rafael Moneo.
The term Kursaal comes from the German words Kur ('cure') and Saal ('room, hall') and therefore etymologically means 'priest room'. A Kursaal or Kurhaus was a typical architectural element of nineteenth-century Central European spas. Due to its function, it was a multipurpose building.
