Giessen is part of the New Dutch Waterline, of which the Fort at Giessen (1881) is a part.
Giessen is located on the Alm, a river part of the bed of which was occupied by the Meuse in the 13th century. The Dammed Maas has existed since 1904.
Giessen Castle once stood in Giessen. The village already had a tuff church in the 11th century. Around 1200, the Meuse changed its course and broke through the bed of the Alm, and then flowed northwest. The church was thus also undermined and rebuilt on a mound outside the dike.

Hiking
The castle is a unique moated castle, the western part of which has been exposed, including part of the moats. The castle consisted of a main keep containing buildings, possibly in the form of a square or rectangular residential tower. The castle was surrounded by a ring wall with buttresses, supporting spar arches. The ring wall was rectangular with rounded corners.
