Look back towards the entrance to take to see where the village of Braithwaite sits nestled at the bottom of the valley, just above Bassenthwaite, the only lake in the Lake District and part of the Derwent Valley flood plain. Beyond, rising up tall and proud, are the outlying fells of Skiddaw and Blencathra. Blencathra is known locally as Saddleback as from some angles, it looks like a saddle.
You are also flanked on either side of the track by the significant fells of Grizedale Pike and Hopegill Head on your left and Causey Pike and Barrow on the right. Although this can be a rather quiet valley to spend time in, you will almost certainly see a walker in the distance on one of the many paths and tracks.
