A sprawling sandy beach and 5.5-mile-long boardwalk attract scores of families to Rockaway Beach in the summer for swimming, sunbathing and sports like volleyball and skateboarding. In season, pizzas, arepas and Italian ice cream are sold and the bar terraces are busy. Surfers can find the right waves along the coast all year round. The streets are lined with pastel-colored apartments and houses - many newly built after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 - and high-rise apartment buildings from the 1960s.
