The Oregon Coast Trail section from Arch Cape to Devil's Cauldron offers a rugged and rewarding journey through dense old-growth forests, across wooden bridges, and along dramatic cliff edges. You'll experience breathtaking ocean views, especially from Cape Falcon, before reaching the spectacular Devil's Cauldron Viewpoint where waves crash around sea stacks. This difficult 14.9-mile (24.0 km) hike, with 2501 feet (762 metres) of elevation gain, is a true test of endurance, taking around 7 hours and 12 minutes to complete.
For this challenging route, plan your visit between late spring and early fall, from May to October, to enjoy the best weather and potentially see wildflowers in July. Be prepared for varied terrain; the path can be muddy and slippery, and sections like the Elk Flats Trail have thick vegetation, so long sleeves and pants are recommended. Always carry enough water and snacks for the duration of the hike.
This segment is a significant part of the larger Oregon Coast Trail, offering a secluded path to connect with nature and passing through the stunning Oswald West State Park. While the full route is difficult, the short walk to Devil's Cauldron viewpoint itself is much easier. The unique geological formation of Devil's Cauldron and the powerful ocean experience make this a memorable destination for those up for the challenge.
