The fountain sculpture was created in 1970 by the artist Reinhard Dietrich,
in reference to the Kuba song "Rolle, Ostseewelle, rolle, ..." –
with the idea of peace and friendship among the seven Baltic Sea states.
The walk-in fountain with nine regularly spaced fountains has been a listed monument since 1984.

The seven sisters represent the seven countries bordering the Baltic Sea.
The original fountain was demolished, modified and rebuilt as part of the commercialization of the city center.
