Thanks to the abbey of Ter Kameren, Houtem received its own chapel very early on, located on the road to Vilvoorde. In 1775 a new chapel, the current church, was built during the administration of Abbess Serafina Snoy, whose coat of arms was preserved above the choir entrance. The church was protected as a monument, the cemetery as a landscape.
