To date (November 2023) restoration work is underway, therefore the area near the castle is not accessible as it is a construction site.

The monumental complex called Castello di Mongiorgio, today largely in ruins, consists of two churches (dating back to the year, one of which is completely ruined), the castle (in ruins) and a castle tower (which collapsed disastrously in 1976), the bridge drawbridge with access arch (unsafe), a rectory, and a bell tower (only externally consolidated in 1888). This historical complex, dating back to 993 AD, was probably built on the ruins of a Roman pagan temple as suggested by the archaeological finds now preserved in the medieval civic museum of Bologna. The two churches are both already mentioned in the Nonantolian list of 1366. The church originally dedicated to San Sigismondo and from 1412 to San Sigismondo and San Pietro, is decidedly older than is commonly believed. Furthermore, the fresco removed from the apse is attributed to the painter Bartolomeo Ramenghi known as "Bagnacavallo", which suggests that the church already had its current layout at the end of the 1400s. Furthermore, the stuccos still present and certainly later are of Renaissance workmanship. The church of San Pietro, known as the church of the village and currently in ruins, is of Romanesque origin but there are no elements for a more precise dating. The complex, in addition to being a heritage protected by the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, is of rare importance in the area as it represents one of the few examples we have received of a medieval castle in Emilia Romagna still retaining its original appearance. Unfortunately, since 1700 and even more so since the post-war period, the castle has experienced a slow but inexorable decline and abandonment.
