The Abbey of Santa Maria di MonteveglioThe church, as the columns of its crypt reveal, is one of the oldest churches in the Bolognese diocese.
After a primitive hermitage, it was the Canons Regular of San Frediano di Lucca, in the mid-twelfth century, who started the reconstruction of the complex in today's Romanesque form.
After a moment of decline, Santa Maria flourished again in 1456 with the Lateran Canons, who carried out various restorations or extensions. In 1628 Pope Gregory XV granted the community the abbey title.
For many centuries the parish church and the canons were the religious, administrative and economic reference point of the territory of today's park, of which they came to own most of the farms, then dismembered and sold in the Napoleonic era.The church and the convent were restored between 1924 and 1934 by the Bolognese Giuseppe Rivani; further interventions have been made recently.
In the isolation of Monteveglio, Don Giuseppe Dossetti, who retired from political life, founded his community in 1961, which found its permanent home in Monte Sole, bringing the monks back to the abbey for the first time since the end of the 18th century.
Today the abbey houses a Franciscan community.(Source: enteparchi.bo.it/parco-dellabbazia-di-monteveglio/punti-di-interesse/labbazia-di-santa-maria-di-monteveglio/)
