The desert-like Tengger Sand Sea has been a protected area since 1919. Several volcanoes, including Mount Bromo and Mount Batok, are located within the sand sea caldera. The sand sea has a diameter of approximately 10 kilometers and covers an area of more than 52 square kilometers.
