Archaeological excavation site behind the museum.
Afrasiab (Uzbek Afrosiyob) was a city in Central Asia and the forerunner of the city of Samarqand. Their tell is located in the northeast of the historical center of Samarkand. It consists of a citadel and the actual fortified city. The city had a system of rectangular paved streets and corresponding residential complexes. Mosques and workshops were also excavated. In 2001, Afrasiab was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Samarkand - Crossroads of Cultures World Heritage Site.
