In short, Fontana is the center of "mer 'e coppe", the dialectal topos which stands for "upper part" and indicates the entire southern side of the island of Ischia, included in the municipality of Serrara Fontana and in a good part of Barano d'Ischia. It is in the upper part of Ischia that one becomes aware of the peasant identity of Ischia, of the agricultural vocation of its inhabitants who have always preferred the certainties of a fertile and fruitful land to the dangers of going to sea.
