Augustenburg Palace is the largest residential building in the region.
The first Augustenburg Palace was built by Ernst Günther, the great-grandson of Christian III from 1660-64. He named it after his wife, Princess Augusta of Glücksburg. This palace fell into disrepair. Frederik Christian I built the current palace between 1764 and 1776. The last duke left Augustenburg in 1848 to participate in the Schleswig-Holstein Uprising against Denmark. After being used as a military hospital and barracks, the palace was converted into a hospital in 1932 and served as a sanatorium for over 75 years.
The palace now houses the Agricultural Authority. The Garden Hall, the Duke's study, and the palace church can be visited as part of a guided tour.
In the gatehouse, you'll find a psychiatric museum, and next door, a mini-museum tells the history of the palace, the town, and the ducal family.

The castle itself cannot be visited, but the castle park and the castle church are freely accessible
