The Central Post Office was the government agency that first began providing postal service in Korea's moder era. However, during the opening ceremony held for the building in December 1884, the Gapshin Coup broke out, leading to the destruction of its annex buildings in the fire that ensued. Only the main building was left standing. In 1893, the building was rebuilt under the name "Jeonwuchongguk (Central Office for Telegraph and Postal Service)."
