The two figures were invented by H. Averdam as "Jan van Dählen un Stuken Libet." In 1919, a drawing of the two appeared in the Stoppelmarkt newspaper as "Jan un Libet up Stoppelmarkt." Since then, the two cult figures have been a fixture at every Stoppelmarkt. They can be recognized by their wooden shoes and traditional robes with colorful headscarves and hats.
