The temple was built in the mid-13th century from granite cubes in the Romanesque style. The founders of the church were the Chwarszcz Templars. Initially, the building did not have a tower, only in the following centuries a massive stone tower was added. Over the centuries, the temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After a fire in the tower at the end of the 19th century, it was partially demolished and rebuilt using brick and wood from which the soaring turret was made. Formerly, the church had three 15th and 16th century bells, which were lost during World War II. Until 1945, there was a cemetery next to the temple, traces of which are still visible on the church wall.

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1260 and was a foundation of the Knights Templar. The church was immortalized by the famous German painter Robert Warthmüller in the well-known painting "The King Everywhere", which shows King Frederick II planting potatoes (the tower has since been changed).
