The Maldegem Market Square is graced by a fountain with the statue of Salomon van Maldeghem. The armored crusader stands on a rearing horse, sword in one hand, the Maldegem coat of arms in the other.
Salomon van Maldeghem was a castellan of Maldegem, essentially a kind of deputy for the Count of Flanders, and son of Franciscus van Maldeghem. He took part in the First Crusade in 1096, led by Count Robert II.
