The chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross on the edge of the village of Machtilshausen was built in the late Baroque architectural style around 1730. It is the successor to a much smaller wooden chapel that was a much-visited place of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages. It has always been on a trade route, which was probably also a feeder route to the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostella. Due to several church robbery incidents in the 1970s, the chapel is mostly closed - but according to the information board, they try to maintain regular opening times.
