The Cordillera de la Sal is a mountain range in the pre-Andean depression near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. It was formed by tectonic activity in the Salar de Atacama, during which layers of continental red sediments and white evaporites were folded and raised. Erosion by the water of the rare rainfall in this extremely hyperarid region has formed a bizarre-looking karst landscape with superficial salt efflorescence and salt caves over the last 4000 years.
