The Drover Heide is a 670 hectare nature and bird sanctuary with outstanding European importance. It is part of the national natural heritage and has been owned by the Natur Heimat Kultur NRW gGmbH foundation since 2016. After the Belgians withdrew, a habitat for rare and endangered plant and animal species was able to develop on the former military training area of the Belgians. The prehistoric crab feels just as at home here as the natterjack toad and the great crested newt in the numerous ponds. Many breeding birds that are sensitive to disturbance, such as the woodlark, nightjar and red-backed shrike, have settled in the protected area.
