From 1914, the Drover Heide served as a parade ground for the garrison in Düren and for their recruit training in World War I.[2] It was confiscated as a military training area in 1951 and used by the Belgian armed forces formerly stationed in Düren and shared by German sites in the area. The area was opened to the public after their departure at the end of 2004 and can now be walked on marked paths. Overall, the area was used militarily for about 100 years. The area is contaminated with ammunition due to bombing and shelling at the end of the Second World War and temporary use as a military training area and therefore the protected area may not be accessed outside of paths.
