Axel was liberated by the Polish First Armored Division in September 1944. During the four-day battle for the city, 25 soldiers from the 10th Regiment of Polish Dragoons were killed when forcing the Axel-Hulst canal.
The monument was erected on the spot where the Poles launched the attack in 1944.
Sculptor Cephas Stauthamer made a bronze statue of a man who falls down, hit in the heart.
A place to pause for a moment.

Axel was liberated in September 1944 by the Polish First Armoured Division. During the four-day battle for the city, 25 soldiers of the 10th Regiment of Polish Dragoons were killed while forcing the Axel-Hulst canal.
In September 1945, the Polish Cross was erected at the canal in memory of this. Sculptor Cephas Stauthamer made a statue of a man who falls down, hit in the heart. The male figure was cast in bronze by the Binder foundry.
The nudity of the statue caused some unrest.

Pause at this impressive Monument to Polish Soldiers in Axel, a place that touches with its simplicity and strength.

The bronze figure depicts a falling backward, naked male figure — a poignant moment, frozen in time. It represents that fraction of a second in which a human lets go of everything: their strength, their struggle, their existence. The sobriety of the figure only makes the emotion stronger.

On the natural stone pedestal, you can read the words that give this place even more meaning:
    “TO POLAND’S SONS
    WHO ON THIS GROUND
    FOR OUR FREEDOM
    TO THEIR DEATH
    FOUGHT.”
