This might be the second-highest mountain in Wales but many hikers won’t realise they’ve even summited it, so focused are they on reaching Snowdon’s magnificent peak. Hiking trails up Garnedd Ugain, also known as Crib-y-Ddysgl, pass first over the notorious, airy ridge of Crib Goch and so this mountain tends to be the realm of experienced hikers.

Garnedd Ugain’s towering, pyramidal summit sits at 3,494 feet (1,065 m) although its prominence from sister-summit Snowdon is a mere 236 feet (72 m). Part of the Snowdon Horseshoe, this summit is a fantastic place to pause and celebrate your Crib Goch achievement and admire the exquisite scenery.

A stunning summit under the gaze of Snowdon

Snowdon has many arms, splaying out as though she wants to keep in touch with multiple neighbouring valleys. As a result, there are technically many hiking trails up Garnedd Ugain to choose from, so long as you can work out how you’ll get back to your car, train or campsite.

The most common route begins at the Pen-y-Pass and takes in the spectacular but vertiginous Crib Goch. If you want to lay your hands on Garnedd Ugain without this airy scramble, you can reach Snowdon by any other trail and simply do an out-and-back to the peak.

Regardless of how you reach it, a clear day will reveal why Garnedd Ugain is such a beautiful objective. An airy, narrow ridge by itself, from here you can see the breathtaking ridges of Crib Goch and Y Lliwedd, with two glittering llyns in the valley between. Snowdon’s true peak is eye-catching while northwards, the Glyderau squat.

Hike up Garnedd Ugain throughout the year in good weather but snow, ice and strong winds are the realm of experienced winter mountaineers only. Llanberis is the best base, filled with accommodation, gear shops and excellent eateries.

    Hiking

Garnedd Ugain's battered trig pillar stands on Wales' second highest peak behind nearby Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). To the south west, an easy arcing path takes you to Yr Wyddfa's summit. To the east is the exciting Crib y Ddysgl ridge, which leads to the even more thrilling Crib Goch.

    Hiking

If you have made it to here via the Crib Goch route then you will probably be happy to know that this battered trig marks the end of your scramble route to Snowdon. It is a little quieter here which makes it a good place to stop for a top up of food and water. Before carrying on. You are likely to need it if you wish to brave the queues to get your snaps of the summit.
